After successfully obtaining the real estate broker's license, Mr Eugene Cheow (24 years old, student) came up with the idea to digitize his notes and sell them online, giving him his first taste of entrepreneurship.
During the interview, Mr Cheow revealed that his mother was engaged in the real estate-related business. Two years ago, he decided to apply for a real estate broker's license, only to help his mother if required. “It’s not easy to get a license. You must complete about 60 hours of courses and pass two exams. If you fail one of the exams, you won’t get the license.”
He points out that the course content covers a wide range of topics, from law to marketing methods. There are many concepts to be mastered. In order to better digest the content, he adopted the Mind Map method and successfully obtained the license on his first attempt. "The Mind Maps really helped me a lot, and I was thinking, are there other uses for these notes?"
Mr Cheow decided to turn all his Mind Maps into digital versions and put them on the online sales platform, Carousell. He said: "I didn't have any expectations, and I didn't know if anyone would buy it. Any transaction was a bonus for me."
Unexpectedly, within a month "on the shelf", the business found its way through the door. Till date, he has sold more than 1,000 Mind Maps.
Mr Cheow recounts that when the safe distancing measures were implemented, he could not go anywhere. He took the opportunity to optimize his small business, including setting up a dedicated website (The RES Tutor) and improving operational procedures. "In the past, after the buyer paid, I had to email the Mind Maps to them as soon as possible. Now, as soon as the money is transferred, the system will automatically send the Mind Maps without delay."
He revealed that even though he has never had any experience in setting up an (e-commerce) website, relevant videos and manuals are widely available online. "After trying, it was not as difficult as I thought. I also encourage everyone, regardless of age or background, to take the most important first step."
